DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Volusia County leaders have taken a big step to ban beach driving along a stretch of Daytona Beach.

According to the Daytona Beach News-Journal, county leaders voted Thursday on a preliminary plan to ban vehicles on the sand in front of the Old Desert Inn.  The inn, off State Road A1A, has had a history of problems, but it's about to become a five-star Westin Resort.

The company said it wants beach driving there banned.  In exchange, the company will build a new parking lot across the street.

A final vote on the beach driving ban is set for July 3.
