Man accused of burglarizing occupied Palm Coast home arrested

Maurice Godwin fled from home on Bird Haven Place

PALM COAST, Fla. – A Bunnell man accused of burglarizing an occupied home in Palm Coast has been arrested, according to the Flagler County Sheriff's Office.

The victim went to his home on Bird Haven Place at 10:45 p.m. Friday and found a gray Dodge Charger parked in his driveway, deputies said. The victim told deputies he did not know who owned the car or why it was in his driveway.

After he entered his home, the victim saw a man, later identified as Maurice Godwin, 35, running through the residence yelling and grunting at him. Deputies said Godwin quickly ran out of the home and got into the Dodge Charger.

Godwin ran over a mailbox as he was backing up, deputies said. The car fled the area in an unknown direction.

The victim called 911 and gave a description of what had happened.

A deputy and officer from the Bunnell Police Department stopped the car at 10:57 p.m. Friday in the area of West State Road 100 and East Black Point Road, deputies said.

After the vehicle pulled over, the deputy attempted to make contact with the driver and as he did, the driver sped away at speeds in excess of 100 mph, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Another deputy saw the Dodge Charger operating without headlights at a high rate of speed in the area of CR 15 and West SR 100, deputies said. As the deputy attempted to catch up to the car, he noticed the car’s brake lights come on and turn to the right.

When the deputy arrived where he had seen the car turn right, he saw that the car had crashed into the guardrail near CR 45 on West SR 100, according to the Sheriff's Office. The deputy got out of his car and could hear someone running in the canal along SR 100. Deputies said they were able to catch Godwin and arrest him without incident.

Godwin was charged with burglary of a structure, burglary of an occupied dwelling, felony theft, both aggravated fleeing and attempting to elude and fleeing and attempting to elude, resisting an officer without violence, criminal mischief, possession of burglary tools, possession of less than 20 grams of cannabis, violation of probation, driving with a suspended license and an Alachua County warrant for a writ of bodily attachment, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said Godwin was booked into the Flagler County Jail.
