SOUTH DAYTONA, Fla. – A man is accused of running and hiding after causing a fatal crash while possibly driving drunk, according to the South Daytona Police Department.
Andrus Holmes, 50, has been on probation since 2015 for leaving the scene of serious crash. His probation was scheduled to end in 2020.
Police said they saw Holmes driving erratically, running red lights and speeding in his black Lexus at 7:29 p.m. Thursday, but he was driving too fast to be pulled over by the original officer so a "be on the lookout" order was issued.
Four minutes later, Holmes ran a red light and crashed into a Nissan truck, driven by 64-year-old Kenneth McDonald, according to a news release.
Witnesses said they saw Holmes run out of the vehicle and call someone on the phone, yelling for that person to "come get me." Holmes did not attempt to help McDonald, who died as a result of his injuries. McDonald was less than a mile from his home when he was struck, police said.
Holmes was found hiding in a wooded area after the crash, according to an arrest report. Police said he was bleeding, behaving aggressively and smelled of alcohol. His injuries were too serious for officials to conduct a field sobriety test.
Holmes is charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving death and violation of probation.
