Man attempted to abduct 12-year-old girl, Orange County deputies say

Girl fights off attacker on way home from school

ORLANDO, Fla. – Orange County deputies on Wednesday continue to search for a man who tried to abduct a 12-year-old girl walking home from school.

Deputies said the girl suffered minor injuries in the kidnapping attempt, which happened around 6 p.m. Tuesday near the intersection of Powers Drive and Ruthie Drive near Silver Star Road in Orlando.  Specifics about her injuries were not released.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office said the girl was grabbed from behind but was able to fight the man off and get away.

"She wrestles with him and actually was able to break free from his hold.  She gets up and starts running south on Powers Drive away from the area to where she could go get some help," Orange County sheriff's Lt. Paul Hopkins said.

The girl's mother then called 911.

A search using K-9s failed to locate the man.

The culprit was described as a black man in his mid-30s.  He has a thin build with black hair and brown eyes.  He also has a goatee that is pointed at the bottom and a very short haircut.  He was wearing a black T-shirt and baggy blue jeans.

A composite sketch is not being released at this time, the Sheriff's Office said.

Deputies said extra patrols were being deployed in the area.

Anyone with information is asked to call CRIMELINE at 800-423-TIPS.
