Man dies after car strikes pole in New Smyrna Beach, police say

Police believe victim suffered medical episode before crash

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. – New Smyrna Beach police said they are investigating after a man died following a single-vehicle crash Saturday morning.

Police said Harold Nolder, 71, was driving north on the 300 block of North Dixie Freeway around 9:35 a.m. when he was believed to have suffered from an unknown medical episode before driving his vehicle off the road and striking a utility pole.

New Smyrna Beach Fire Rescue officials treated Nolder for his life-threatening injuries at the scene, but were unable to stabilize him, police said. He was transported to Florida Hospital New Smyrna Beach.

Police said officials' life-saving efforts failed and Nolder was later pronounced dead by an emergency room doctor.

Officials did not say whether Nolder suffered from pre-existing health conditions. The incident remains under investigation.
