Dog euthanized after attack

Officials said this dog attacked a man at a Lake County animal shelter.

LAKE COUNTY, Fla. – A man who was meeting a dog he was interested in adopting instead had to be taken to a hospital after the animal bit him in the face, officials said.

The dog had been at the Lake County Animal Services shelter since Dec. 15 and during that time had behavioral issues, but was showing signs of improvement.

A couple went to see the dog around 2:15 p.m. Thursday, accompanied by a staff member. The dog urinated on the floor so the staff member left to get a mop. Upon return, the staff member found the dog biting the man's face, the county said.

The staff member used a mop to hit the dog and stop the attack. The man was taken to a hospital where he was treated and released.

The dog was placed in quarantine after the incident. He has since been euthanized.

"We are deeply concerned with the wellbeing of the resident who was injured," the shelter said in a statement. "While staff followed county protocol, we will re-evaluate our policies and procedures to determine if enhanced measures can be added to ensure the safety of the public and staff."
