Man seen walking from neighbor's burning home with gas can in hand, officials say

David Nelson, 55, taken into custody

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – A man was arrested Thursday night after a fire broke out at a home in Daytona Beach.

Several fire engines arrived at the two-story vacant home, which was fully engulfed, at 1304 N. Shangri-La Drive.

The Daytona Beach Fire Department said the owner called 911 and stated she saw a male walking away from the house after the fire started. She later said she knew the male and he lived across the street.

"When we first got on scene, we heard a man was seen leaving the scene with a gas can," Daytona Beach Fire Department Chief Robert Turner said.

Officials said Nelson admitted post-Miranda to starting the fire because, he claimed, someone at the home stole his identity.

"It appears to be deliberately set, so we're just investigating at this time," Turner said.

Nelson, who was taken into custody without incident, was also reportedly treated for second-degree burns.

Officials said the house suffered extensive damage.
