Man steals money from Girl Scout selling cookies

Deputies search for man in theft outside Walmart in Deltona

DELTONA, Fla. – Authorities in Volusia County continue to search for a man caught on video stealing a money box from a Girl Scout selling cookies outside a store.

The theft happened Sunday afternoon outside a Walmart in Deltona.

Witness Katie Lalanne said the guy ran right past her after he stole the box from a 12-year-old girl.

"How would you feel if your little girl went through that? I hope they catch him," Lalanne said.

She said it happened so fast.

"This guy walked right by the table and it looked like he was chuckling and grabbed the cash box and start jogging. There was another witness and myself, we just looked at each other like, 'Did that just happen,'" said Lalanne.

Lalanne  said she saw the man run into the parking lot and climb into a gray Hyundai Santa Fe with a North Carolina tag.

"You could see the anger in every mother that was standing around that table by the time the cop got there, and everybody started telling what they saw," Lalanne said.

Detectives said Walmart surveillance caught the man, who was with a woman and small child, just moments before the money box was stolen.

The three walked together to the car and then the man returned to grab the cash.

"To know that she had been out there all day just trying to sell some cookies. It was, like, 'Poor thing.' We all work all day and to have your pay check taken like that  -- it's discouraging," said Lalanne.

Anyone with information is urged to call the Volusia County Sheriff's Office.
