Skydiver dies in DeLand after jumping from plane

DeLand police investigate man's death

DeLAND, Fla. – A man wearing what appeared to be a partially deployed parachute was found dead Tuesday near Skydive DeLand, police said.

Police said the unidentified skydiver was in a plane operated by Skydive DeLand near the DeLand Municipal Airport.

DeLand police said officers were called at 10:08 a.m. and discovered the man's body near 1600 Flight Line Blvd.

Officers said the parachute did not appear to have malfunctioned.

The Federal Aviation Administration was notified, and police officers were reaching out to Italian consulate officials about the skydiver's death, the Daytona Beach News-Journal reported.

Skydive Deland has had five fatalities in the past four years, the newspaper reported.

Skydive DeLand is one of the nation's busiest skydiving facilities and attracts jumpers of all skill levels.
