Deputies said that upon their arrival, they found one woman unconscious, suffering from severe trauma to her head. Deputies said they also found Brittany Suber, 23, who had suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Both women were immediately transported to a nearby hospital, deputies said.

Suber was treated and has since been released from the hospital. The other woman remains in the hospital's intensive care unit, according to deputies.

The Sheriff's Office said its investigation revealed that Durant Smith, 40, arrived at the home the women were in to get some of his personal items and attacked the women with an ax and a block of wood.

Smith fled before deputies arrived, the Sheriff's Office said.

A K-9 unit and his partner later found Smith hiding in a vehicle parked on NE 118th Avenue Road, deputies said.

Smith was taken into custody and transported to the Marion County Jail, deputies said. Smith is facing charges of attempted murder and violation of a domestic violence injunction, deputies said.
