ORLANDO, Fla. – A man is jailed after a mother and daughter claim he attacked them while they wrapped a birthday gift.
Orlando police say the incident happened at approximately 8 p.m. Tuesday in the parking lot of Walgreens, located at the corner of Edgewater Drive and Par Avenue.
Kirsten Telan told News 6 she suspected something was wrong when she first saw Russell Paul Ullom, 53.
"He's approaching me, and now, he starts walking very quickly," she said. "I said to myself, 'He is going to attack us.'"
She said Ullom grabbed both of their wrists and yelled, "I love you! I love you!"
She said she wrestled herself away from him and ran inside the store with him chasing them.
"He took me, and he threw me down on the display sign, so my body is now on the sign on the ground, and he is standing over us, and Abby is shaking the scissors at him," she said. "All of a sudden, he just turns around and runs out."
Telan said she watched as Ullom started her car and tried to back out of the parking lot.
She said she wrestled him for control of the front driver's side door when another driver pulled in and helped.
She said the driver, Jessie Pugh, opened the door and pulled Ullom out by his shirt collar, pinning him to the ground before police arrived.
Ullom was arrested and charged with attempted carjacking and battery.
News 6 has found out Ullom was arrested last year for attempted burglary and petit theft, and he was found not competent to stand trial.
According to court records, Ullom was released from jail on the condition he seek mental treatment and return to court to face the charges.
Ullom is in the Orange County Jail on $3,000 bond. The judge at his first appearance did not make mention of his previous conditional release.
"My goal was to get out there, to get him and get him locked up. So, I hope he stays in prison," Telan said.
