Osprey, babies preventing sign from being removed at demolished Titusville mall

Birds nesting on old sign of Miracle City Mall

TITUSVILLE, Fla. – The old sign at the Miracle City Mall is becoming an unexpected landmark in Titusville.  Unexpected, because of who suddenly decided to move in, keeping the sign from being removed.

In the same space, construction is now underway on the new Titusville Landing shopping center.

The old mall that used to stand here is a distant memory.

Everything that is, except the big sign on US 1.

Ospreys are protected by federal law.

So the sign and the nest can't go anywhere until mama bird and the babies fly the coop.

"When the babies fly away, they'll be able to take the sign down and get rid of the nest," said construction worker Broks Ramage.

The developer could also get a permit to move the birds, but builders say the birds are not in the way of construction.

So until their feathers flock somewhere else, 'Mama Osprey', her babies and their nest are here to stay.

So is the sign.
