DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The owner of Top Gun Shooting Range and Restaurant in Daytona Beach, which opens Friday, says safety is a top priority.
Everyone in each party will need a driver's license scanned, and anyone who has had a drink can't go to the range.
"My entire staff has been trained by the police department to recognize inebriated people," said owner Ron Perkinson. "I don't know any other range in the country that has trained the way my staff is trained."
Perkinson said he put a lot of thought into the concept and that the technology used inside the facility is bulletproof.
"They check everybody. You can't have a drink and go shoot a gun, so it's safe. But it's fun to sit here," said customer Laurel Powers.
The owner said at first there was a lot of backlash, that the idea of guns near alcohol was misunderstood.
"People would stop at the title and didn't read through; they were asking if my mom had dropped me on my head," Perkinson said.
Customers in the restaurant can see through to the gun range, but the walls are almost 2-feet thick, so they can't hear the noise.
"I thought it was going to be a bit of a liability, but as long as people are responsible -- safety first," said one customer.
"I encourage you to come," Perkinson said. "I'll personally walk you around myself and show you the safety features. I love to show everyone."
The soft opening is Friday at 10 a.m.
