Person of interest, car found in Apopka fatal hit-and-run crash

Rafael Duarte, 56, dies after being struck

APOPKA, Fla. – Florida Highway Patrol troopers say they have found the vehicle believed to be involved in the hit-and-run crash in Apopka that killed a father last week.

56-year-old Rafael Duarte, an employee of Frank Gay Septic, had just completed a service call and was returning to his truck around 6 p.m. on Wednesday. Investigators said as he approached the driver's side of the truck, a vehicle hit him. A passerby saw him laying in the road.

Duarte was eventually airlifted to Orlando Regional Medical Center with very serious injuries, troopers said. Friday night, Duarte's family said he died as a result of his injuries.

Troopers said an anonymous tip led them to a 1997 Honda sedan in Casselberry that could have been involved in the crash. The owner of the car is considered a person of interested and is cooperating with the investigation, according to FHP.
