Police: Identity thief steals $10K using fraudulent credit cards

Caught on camera - police turn to public to ID

WEST MELBOURNE, Fla. – Police say a credit card thief is ripping off people in West Melbourne, opening five credit cards in the same victim's name.

The man allegedly used the cards to make thousands of dollars in purchases from West Melbourne area stores like Sears, Best Buy, and Sam's Club on US-192.

That's where police say the man was caught on surveillance video.

Investigators are now turning to the public for help.

"We want to be able to identify him, locate him and arrest him," said Capt. Richard Cordeau with West Melbourne Police.

Police say a victim came forward after the thief racked up upwards of $10,000 in charges.

The man allegedly bought electronics, cigarettes and alcohol.

Investigators say the man stole the victim's personal information in March.

They're not sure how he did it, but after sharing the surveillance video on their Facebook page Wednesday, they hope someone will come forward.

"The length that this man went to with one particular victim- five credit cards," said Cordeau.  "We're pretty confident that if somebody sees him and they know him, they'll recognize him. The video is that clear."

Police think there could be more victims in this case.

They say if they catch the man he will be arrested on identity theft and fraud charges.

If you know who the man is, you're asked to call CrimeLine at 1-800-423-TIPS.
