3 arrested in fatal Sanford shooting

SANFORD, Fla. – Three people were arrested after a man in his 20s was shot to death Tuesday on Sixth Street in front of an apartment complex filled with families, police said.

Upward of 20 evidence markers on the street showed where more than a dozen shell casings landed.

Sanford police told News 6 a 911 caller reported that the shooters got into a car and drove off after shooting Johnkevius Carey.

Police pursued the vehicle, which crashed after a brief chase at 18th Street and Airport Boulevard, authorities said.

"The pursuit was a solid pursuit. They were looking for suspects just engaged in a shooting, which turned out to be a fatal shooting, so it was a good pursuit," said Sanford police spokesperson Bianca Gillette. "Our officers were absolutely within policy to pursue a vehicle that had just left a fatal shooting because there was serious injury or death due to that crime."

Police said after the car crashed, the three men inside ran off, but officers quickly caught up and arrested Dazman Williams, Shakira Williams and David Kimbrough Jr.

Carey was taken to Central Florida Regional Hospital after the shooting, where he died of his injuries.

Mothers holding babies expressed outrage that so many shots were fired in front of their apartment complex on Sixth Street.

"We got a lot of little kids.," a woman identified as Sheryl said. "You got all these kids walking around. You come out shooting like that? That's sad."

"Today's events led to a senseless death committed by individuals who apparently had no respect for those within our community, Chief Cecil E. Smith said. "At some point, we as a community must say enough is enough and come together to put a stop to these tragedies."

Dazman Williams is charged with first-degree premeditated murder, felon in possession of a firearm and use of a firearm in commission of a felony.

Shakira Williams is charged with accessory after the fact first-degree premeditated murder, felony fleeing and eluding and resisting officers without violence.

Kimbrough is charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and resisting officers without violence.
