NAPLES, Fla. – Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis spoke in Naples Tuesday afternoon at a wetlands research center, a day after announcing funding for environmental upgrades.

DeSantis used the speech to tout more environmental upgrades, including efforts by the Florida Department of Transportation to install 38 additional wildlife crossings across the state, which are used by wildlife to safely get across highways.

DeSantis also spoke about current projects to deal with red tide and mitigate harmful algal blooms. To that end, he signed HB 1565, the Florida Red Tide Mitigation and Technology Development Initiative.

This allows the Department of Environmental Protection, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and the MOTE Marine Laboratory to coordinate efforts to address red tide in Florida.

DeSantis was at the Kapnick Education and Research Center, which is part of the Everglades Wetland Research Park and Florida Gulf Coast University. He was joined by Florida Department of Environmental Protection Secretary Shawn Hamilton.

On Monday, DeSantis was in West Palm Beach to tout funding for environmental issues over the years.

“As of January 2025, we are on track to acquire $6.5 billion in upgrades for the Everglades Restoration Project since 2019,” DeSantis said.
