Sanford homeowner catches handyman on camera in $70K theft, police say

Woman suspected handyman, installed surveillance cameras

SANFORD, Fla. – A Sanford homeowner caught her handyman stealing $70,000 worth of jewelry and cash from her home by installing surveillance cameras, according to police.

Police said Philip Liles, 53, was caught on video entering his employer's home, taking the safe key and stealing money from inside the woman's safe.

The woman suspected the items missing from her home were stolen by Liles, so she installed a camera. When Liles went to burglarize the home a second time, police were waiting for him and arrested him on the spot, according to the report.

Liles was charged with 15 felonies and 2 misdemeanors which include; burglary of occupied dwelling, burglary of unoccupied dwelling, dealing in stolen property, false ownership to secondhand dealer, grand theft, and petty theft.

Some of the items stolen were recovered at pawn shops, police said.
