Sanford police: Babysitter charged in boy's near-drowning

8-month-old in critical condition, police say

SANFORD, Fla. – A Sanford babysitter has been charged with child neglect after police say the 8-month-old boy she was watching was found submerged in the bathtub.

Mariah Berry, 18, was watching the boy and his 2-year-old sister when the incident occurred. The boy is in the Intensive Care Unit at Florida Hospital and is in critical condition, police said.

The children's mother was at work and the 2-year-old was not injured, police said.

The judge on Wednesday held Berry on her original $4,000 bond. Berry isn't allowed to have contact with anyone under 18-years-old or the victim's family.
