Shootout between 2 vehicles precedes crash in Orlando

Deputies searching for both drivers

ORLANDO, Fla. – Orange County sheriff's deputies are on the hunt for two drivers who witnesses say were shooting at each other along a busy stretch of road Friday night.

Deputies received numerous 911 calls reporting the shootout, which began near the intersection of West Colonial Drive and Powers Drive.

"We were fortunate today innocent bystanders weren't shot from the gunshots from both of those vehicles," said Orange County Sheriff's Lt. Spike Hopkins.

A deputy later spotted a Ford pickup truck believed to be one of the vehicles involved. As the officer tried to pull over the truck, the driver sped off, according to investigators.

Since the driver was putting other lives at risk, deputies said they began to chase the truck.

As the truck approached the intersection of Pine Hills Road and Old Winter Garden Road, it swerved off the road and crashed into a light pole, knocking the pole down, said investigators. The driver then took off running.

For several hours Friday night, the sheriff's helicopter and deputies on the ground unsuccessfully tried to locate the suspected gunman. Authorities are also searching for the other car involved in the shootout, believed to be a dark-colored Chrysler Sebring.
