Sanford woman's late husband's Army jacket found in St. Louis

Woman to be reunited with jacket

SANFORD, Fla. – A jacket, tucked away for nearly 30 years, contained a different name and belongs to a Sanford woman's late husband.

The jacket belongs to Dewey Prescott, the late husband of Norma Prescott, 81.

Dewey was married to Prescott for 60 years and passed away in 2010. He served in the Army and Navy, working on airplanes and doing mechanic work, according to Prescott.

"I thought it was a scam, because as far as I knew my husband had never been in that state," Prescott said. "I thought, 'How could someone have his jacket?'"

The jacket was found in the closet of Kathy Bold, in St. Louis, Missouri.

Bold wanted to display her father's Army jacket. She noticed that the name inside the jacket was R. McDonald, and her father's name is R. Biggerstaff. She took the jacket to the National Records Administration in north St. Louis, and investigators believed that the coat belongs to Dewey.

The jacket contains a portion of Dewey's serial number. The investigators believe that the jacket can be reused. It may have originally belonged to McDonald and then Biggerstaff, and later to Dewey.

"I know that the two grandsons are really excited about the jacket because they really love their Papa, " Prescott said. "I've got 60 years of memories, so I don't need a coat, but they might like to have it. We had lots of good times together ... He always said, 'Once someone is gone, they're gone and you're suppose to live,' and that's what I try to do."

Bond is planning on flying to Sanford to meet up with Prescott to personally return the jacket on Tuesday.
