MERRITT ISLAND, Fla. – Three teens are accused of stealing a car and leading police on a chase through Brevard County that topped speeds of 100 mph, according to the Melbourne Police Department.
Police spotted the vehicle driving recklessly at 2:23 a.m. Friday at South Babcock Street and University Boulevard in Melbourne. The car, which police said was stolen from a gas station, was driving 90 mph and disregarding other vehicles on the road, according to the arrest report.
"They were driving all over the road. The high-speed chase was an extreme danger to the public," the assistant state attorney said.
The officer activated his lights and tried to pull over the vehicle, but the teens continued to speed at about 111 mph, police said. The car hit a curb while the driver was trying to avoid stop sticks, causing its left tire to deflate before it turned onto North Harbor City Boulevard, according to the affidavit.
The vehicle's tires started to spark and spun into a ditch on Courtney Avenue in Merritt Island. The driver, 19-year-old Javone Williams, passenger Tywan McFatten, 18, and a 16-year-old girl ran out of the car, police said.
All three teens were arrested in the area. They are all charged with grand theft of a motor vehicle.
Williams is also charged with fleeing and eluding, reckless driving and driving without a license. The girl is also charged with resisting without violence and violation of juvenile probation.
Williams appeared before a judge Friday at the Brevard County Jail and was assigned a $106,000 bond. He denied being the driver. His next court date is scheduled for April 13.
McFatten posted a $2,000 bond Friday.
