Thousands pack downtown Orlando to watch Orange Ball drop

Church Street transforms into giant party for huge crowds

ORLANDO, Fla. – Thousands packed downtown Orlando to watch the Orange Ball drop on New Year's Day.

Church Street was transformed into one giant party for the huge crowds.

Church Street Entertainment said the crowds were bigger than last year with ticket sales up by 15 percent.

"I think the energy is fantastic, it's electric, really alive with a lot of people," said one partygoer.

New Year's Eve wasn't just a big night for restaurants and bars, but also for taxis and the ride-sharing service Uber.

Uber officials told Local 6 that New Year's Eve was their busiest night of the year. Prices were expected to surge just after midnight until 2:30 a.m.

Orlando police were out to make sure things ran smoothly and security was also tight around the Amway Center, where Billy Joel performed a special New Year's Eve concert.
