Traffic light set to be put up at dangerous intersection in Apopka

Intersection is at Plymouth-Sorrento Road and Lester Road

APOPKA, Fla. – A dangerous intersection in Apopka is finally getting a traffic light.

"There have been a lot of accidents there,” says Pete Fernandez.

The intersection is at Plymouth-Sorrento Road and Lester Road in Apopka.

Residents who live nearby are concerned.

"You said there have been accidents?" asked News 6 Eryka Washington.

"There were two in one day a couple weeks ago," Fernandez said.

The Fernandez family said cars and trucks speed through and rarely slow down.

"The dump trucks speed through and they'll just run right over you.  If you’re gonna turn, you need to slow down a block away," Fernandez said.

This area has grown tremendously from State Road 429 to the expansion of Wekiva Parkway.

Residents say that because of the traffic and accidents, they've been fighting for a traffic light.

But the City of Apopka said it’s coming by September.

"We certainly understand some of the frustration for the wait on this project," said Robert Sargent, spokesperson for the City of Apopka.

Part of the delay was negotiating with property owners.

"The city of Apopka had to negotiate with property owners around this intersection needed to do the improvements," said Sargent.

Improvements to this intersection:
1.             A left turn lane will be added on Yothers road
2.            A traffic signal with a masts arm will be added
3.            The intersection will be repaved

"All these improvements are very, very important, they are long overdue much, much needed," said Sargent.

Construction should begin within the next couple of weeks.  According to the city of Apopka, the project  will coincide with the Wekiva Parkway construction project at Yothers Road in hopes of minimizing impact for drivers.

The intersection construction project should be complete in 60 days.
