Police ID man accused of fatally shooting wife, son in Vista Lakes home

Hector Collazo identified as suspect

ORLANDO, Fla. – A man shot and killed his wife and stepson Thursday afternoon in an Orlando home in the Vista Lakes community, according to Orlando police.

Police on Friday identified the man as Hector Collazo. Police said he's accused of shooting and killing his wife, Caryn Collazo, 57, and his stepson, Zachary Humelsine, 26.

Hector Collazo's 15-year-old son, who was able to safely escape the home, called 911 at 1:08 p.m. Thursday and said his father had shot his mother and brother in their home at 582 Lake Champlain Drive.

Orlando Police Department spokeswoman Michelle Guido said the Hector Collazo called 911 soon after the shooting.

"OPD's crisis intervention team specialists were able to talk to him from between five and 10 minutes and were able to get him to peacefully surrender and come out of the home, where OPD officers were waiting," Guido said.

According to police, Hector Collazo said he shot his wife and stepson because he was threatened with a knife.

Police said Humelsine only retrieved a knife after Hector Collazo pushed his mother to the ground and slammed their bedroom door. When Humelsine approached Collazo to help his mother, Hector Collazo shot his wife and then turned the gun on Humelsine, police said.

A neighbor next door said he knew the man in passing and would offer cordial hellos, but wasn't on a first-name basis with the family.

"As soon as I heard it, I was like, I got the chills and everything. I was just, like, shocked. I can't believe it, you know? I'm saddened," the neighbor said.

Collazo was booked into the Orange County Jail on two charges of second-degree murder with a firearm.

Guido said an investigation is ongoing.
