UCF investigates reports of credit card fraud on campus

Officials: Fraud reported after cards used at private business vendor on campus

ORLANDO, Fla. – The University of Central Florida is investigating multiple reports of credit card fraud possibly occurring on campus.

University officials said on Thursday that fraudulent charges appeared on accounts after credit card and debit cards were used at a private business vendor on campus, like restaurants and retailers. Officials said many reports involved businesses in the Student Union, Knights Plaza and the John T. Washington Center.

None of the 10 reports filed as of Thursday afternoon have involving university-controlled areas, including class registration, financial aid or housing, according to officials. Officials said an additional 20 "anecdotal stories from students and faculty and staff members, as well as posts to social media, have been noted."

"Initial information also leads university officials to believe that this is unrelated to a cyberattack against the university earlier this year. Information shows this involves only credit and debit card data," officials wrote in a post on UCF's website. "UCF Police have contacted the Secret Service about the reports; that agency is charged with protecting key areas of banking and finance. UCF police investigators are working with campus technology teams to conduct physical and virtual reviews of equipment and networks."

Officials said they also instructed campus vendors to review their financial systems. A campus-wide email was sent out to students to notify them of the investigation.

No other details were released. The investigation is ongoing.
