University of Florida QB Will Grier suspended

Grier says positive drug test stems from over-the-counter medication

ORLANDO, Fla. – University of Florida quarterback Will Grier said Monday that he took an over-the-counter medication that contained a substance that violates NCAA policies.

Grier, a 20-year-old redshirt freshman, has been suspended for at least the remainder of the 2015 season.

"I took an over-the-counter supplement that had something in it," Grier said at a news conference. "I did not check with the medical staff before taking it. I really hope that people can learn from this, learn from my mistake, and I'm really, really sorry to everyone, truly sorry."

Head coach Jim McElwain said that Florida will appeal the suspension.

Grier has started the last five games for the Gators and would have started Saturday at No. 6 LSU (5-0, 3-0). Sophomore Treon Harris is expected to start in his place.

Grier has completed 65.8 percent of his passes for 1,204 yards, with 10 touchdowns and three interceptions.

Grier is the first Florida quarterback to pass for more than 200 yards in three consecutive games since Tim Tebow in 2009.
