Police said a man and a woman had just finished eating lunch when they were approached by two armed men, one of whom was wearing a mask. The assailants stole jewelry from the couple, police said.
The owner told police that he heard yelling, so he stepped outside to see what was happening.
"The lady, she was screaming for help. She was saying, 'Help. Help. They're robbing me,'" the owner said. "One of the guys pushed her and she fell."
One of the accused robbers shot at the 40-year-old owner of the restaurant.
"I yelled, 'Hey, stop,' and one of them shot at me," said the owner, who did not want to be identified. "I took my gun and (shot back at them)."
Police said in April that it was possible that one or both culprits were wounded because blood was found at the scene. Police have not clarified whether Martin was struck by a bullet.
The restaurant owner was not hit, police said.
"He was trying to be a Good Samaritan," a woman said.
"They shot at me without any reason," the owner said.
The robbers left the scene in a dark-colored Dodge Charger, according to Daytona police.
