Victim in mass shooting from Cocoa served in Kuwait

Brown received multiple awards for his service

Antonio Davon Brown, 30

COCOA, Fla. – Antonio Davon Brown, 30, a 2004 graduate of Titusville High School, spent a year in Kuwait with the U.S. Army and received multiple awards for his service, including two Global War on Terrorism medals.

News 6 partner Florida Today reports that according to information provided by Wayne V. Hall of Army media relations in the Pentagon, Brown listed Cocoa as his home when he entered military service in 2008 after completion of the ROTC program at Florida A&M University.

He attended FAMU on a four-year ROTC scholarship and graduated with a criminal justice degree, said Lt. Col. Tad Fichtel.

He was promoted to captain in March 2012, and was a human resources officer in the Adjutant Generals branch in the U.S. Army Reserve, assigned to 3rd Battalion, 383rd Regiment Combat Support in St. Louis.

He was deployed to Kuwait from April 2010 to March 2011.

Fichtel provided this statement: "The U.S. Army Reserve family expresses great sadness in learning of the death of Capt. Brown, and grieve with his family and friends. Our hearts and
prayers go out to his family and friends during this incredibly difficult time. He was a valuable member of our team and will be greatly missed."

Brown's military assignments were:

  • August 2008: Commissioned as second lieutenant at Fort Benning, Georgia, upon completion of ROTC Program at Florida A&M University, Tallahassee
  • August 2008-May 2009: 642nd Combat Support (CS) Group, 81st Regional Readiness Command, Decatur, Georgia
  • May 2009-May 2012: Ordered to Active Duty with 1st Special Troop Battalion, Fort Riley, Kansas
  • May-August 2012: 642nd Combat Support (CS) Group, 81st Regional Readiness Command, Decatur, Georgia  
  • August 2012-November 2013: 2nd Battalion, 350th Regiment (Logistical Support), Camp Blanding, Florida
  • November 2013-Present: 3rd Battalion, 383rd Regiment Combat Support-Combat Service Support (CS-CSS), St. Louis, 

During his service he received the following awards:

  • Meritorious Service Medal; Army Achievement Medal (two awards)
  • National Defense Service Medal
  • Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal
  • Global War on Terrorism Service Medal
  • Army Service Ribbon
  • Overseas Service Ribbon 
  • Armed Forces Reserve Medal (with M device)
  • Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal (two awards)

According to a report on the website for KOKO News 5 in Oklahoma City, Brown's mother and stepfather, Rossetta and Ellis Evans, of Midwest City, Oklahoma, were on their way to Orlando after learning about Brown's death.
