Volusia County beaches packed for Memorial Day

Safety patrol warns of rip currents

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – Memorial Day in Volusia County has beaches packed, but that hasn't stopped people from joining in the fun.

"Holy moly, this is an awesome day today," one beachgoer said.

"It feels good out, the kids are having fun so that's all that matters," added another beachgoer, William Knox.

The Volusia County Beach safety patrol has been warning swimmers of rip currents and telling everyone to swim in front of lifeguard stands.

"We went swimming, but we don't go to far out because of that," one mom said.

Lifeguards were keeping a close eye on people in the water, and crews have been riding along the beach making sure everyone is safe.

"They're doing their job, waving their flag around, making sure everyone is safe today," a father said.

Officials said most of the areas in Volusia County are closed for capacity and that so far the ocean has been cooperating.

"It's looking like a good day because I know today usually a lot of people getting hurt, but it's looking good today," said beachgoer Mark Rodrigeuz.

Ocean Rescue said it's had a couple of rescues but nothing major.
