Woman's body found in tent in Melbourne

Cause of death not yet known

MELBOURNE, Fla. – Melbourne police are investigating the discovery of a woman's body found in a tent several feet in the woods behind a Melbourne convenience store.

The unidentified woman, believed to be in her 60s, was found about 7:15 p.m. Sunday behind the Racetrac gas station at Eau Gallie Boulevard just east of the Interstate 95 interchange, News 6 partner Florida Today reported.

"Her friends had not seen her in several days and went to check on her," said Sgt. Shawn Eising of the Melbourne Police Department. "We've already called out detectives to check it out."

Several Melbourne patrol officers were at the site along with crime scene investigators.

Police said a number of homeless people live in the heavily wooded area.

The cause of death was not immediately known.
