Big Drive: I-4 traffic on Kirkman interchange shifts to new bridge

Bridge is first of 140 planned

ORLANDO, Fla. – It's a milestone for The Big Drive, the 21-mile project on Interstate 4 in Central Florida.

Construction crews on Monday shifted northbound traffic on Kirkman Road in Orlando to a new bridge that has been under construction since 2015.

"This is the first bridge that's been built as part of the project that we're going to put brand new traffic on," said David Parks, the project's Public Information Officer.

The reconfiguration is expected to improve traffic flow, widen the interstate and eliminate dangerous traffic weaving.

Crews will also be switching exits on the left to the right side.

"It really fits more with driver's expectations, especially in this area where we have a lot of out-of-town visitors who would be expecting a right-hand exit," Parks said.

Moving the exits to the right will take away the need for cars to cross over multiple lanes of traffic, which will hopefully reduce the number of accidents.

This bridge is the first of 140 that are planned to be built by the completion of The Big Drive project.
