2 dead, 3 injured in head-on crash near Cocoa

18-year-old girl suffers serious injuries in crash

COCOA, Fla. – Two people were killed and three others were injured early Wednesday in a head-on crash in Brevard County, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The FHP said Ryan Dolan, 27, of Cocoa, and William Schuster, 31, of Rockledge, died in the crash, which was reported at 12:18 a.m. on Grissom Parkway at Canaveral Groves Boulevard, north of Cocoa.

Troopers say Dolan was driving a 2017 Ford Explorer south on Grissom Parkway when he traveled around a vehicle that was stopped at a light, went through the intersection and struck a 2000 Jeep SUV head-on.

"That driver that passed away [Dolan], from what we're seeing, would be at fault for this collision," Trooper Steve Montiero said.

Dolan and Schuster died at the scene, the FHP said. Neither were wearing seat belts, troopers said. A 29-year-old Cocoa woman who was riding in the Explorer suffered minor injuries and was taken to Wuestoff Rockledge Hospital, the FHP said.

The driver of the Jeep, an 18-year-old Cocoa woman, suffered serious injuries and was taken to Holmes Regional Hospital, the FHP said. She was not wearing a seat belt, according to troopers.

Her passenger, a 15-year-old Cocoa girl, suffered minor injuries and was also taken to Holmes Regional, the FHP said.

Troopers said tests are pending on Dolan to see if alcohol played a role in the crash.

"It appears that alcohol may have played a role," Montiero said. "Or if not, some very poor judgment played a role in passing a vehicle, running a red light and striking an innocent driver on the roadway."
