9-year-old boy dies after car strikes him, father in Daytona Beach

Driver does not appear to be at fault, police say

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – A 9-year-old boy has died after he and his father were struck while they crossed a road in Daytona Beach, police said.

The accident was reported just before 8 p.m. Monday on Nova Road near Brentwood Drive.

Police said Miguel A. Leonor, 27, and his son, Anthony D. Altamirano, were crossing Nova Road against the signal and were hit by a vehicle.

Both victims were taken to Halifax Hospital as trauma alert patients.

Leonor suffered injuries to his lower and upper body and was listed in stable condition.

Anthony suffered head injuries and multiple fractures and died at the hospital, police said.

Officers said the driver who hit the man and the boy stopped at the scene and did not appear to be at fault.
