Troopers said Dewey Nelson, of Sanford, hit the school bus at 7:25 a.m. when the bus pulled into his direct path while crossing Ronald Reagan Boulevard near Carriage Cove Way in Sanford.

Nelson was pronounced dead at the scene, troopers said.

According to the FHP, as many as 25 students were on the bus, which was headed to Midway Elementary School in Sanford. None of the students or the bus driver, Robert Coates, 68, of Sanford, were injured, troopers said.

Charges are possible against Coates, the FHP said.

Another bus took the students to school, troopers said.

Seminole County Public Schools told News 6 that grief counselors will be at Midway Elementary to assist the students.

“We are deeply saddened that one of our school buses was involved in a fatal accident this morning," said Seminole County schools in a statement. "Our sincere condolences are with the family members of the deceased individual.  While we are thankful our students were safe and unharmed, our focus and thoughts are with those who lost a loved one today.”

Roads were closed in the area as the FHP investigated.
