ORLANDO, Fla. – A Southwest pilot says he was forced to make an emergency landing Sunday afternoon because the plane was low on fuel.
Flight 3316 took off from Orlando International Airport, bound for Pittsburgh.
After the pilot declared an emergency, the plane landed at Allegheny County Airport, nearly 30 miles away from the Pittsburgh International Airport.
Passengers said they were told that an air show in the area prevented the plane from getting clearance to land, causing the plane to run low on fuel.
Passengers were given pizza as a compromise, and they had to take buses to get to the airport in Pittsburgh.
The airline said the diversion was made out of an "abundance of caution."
"Southwest Flight 3316 operating from Orlando to Pittsburgh safely landed at Alleghany County Airport to avoid using contingency fuel reserve. Out of an abundance of caution, the captain in command declared an emergency to receive priority handling from air traffic controllers to use the alternate airport. There are no reports of injuries. We have worked quickly to get the 143 customers either to Pittsburgh or on buses to catch other flights to connecting destinations.," Southwest said in a statement.
No other details have been released.
