Record rain falls in Orlando; TS Don, 2nd system swirl in Atlantic

ORLANDO, Fla. – A record amount of rain fell Monday in Orlando, and more wet weather is expected in Central Florida.

"With a total of 3.09 inches, Orlando topped the daily rainfall record for July 17, which was 2.47, set in 1950," News 6 meteorologist Troy Bridges said. 

The coverage of rain on Tuesday will be 70 percent as the sea breezes come together, mainly after 3 p.m.

The high temperature in Orlando will hit 93 degrees, one above the average on this date. The "feels like" temperature will be 100, Bridges said.

"Afternoon highs will remain close to the average of 92 for the end of the week," Bridges said.

Rain chances will be 60 percent on Wednesday and Thursday and 50 percent from Friday through the weekend.

Pinpointing the tropics

Tropical Storm Don continues to head toward the Lesser Antilles.

"Don will eventually move into South America and will have no impact on the United States," Bridges said.

Another area of low pressure is behind Don in the Atlantic.

"This tropical wave, accompanied by a well-defined low-pressure system, is located several hundred miles west-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands," Bridges said. "Gradual development of the system is possible through mid-week while it moves toward the west-northwest at 10 to 15 mph."

After that, environmental conditions are forecast to become less conductive for development.

The system has a 30 percent chance of development over the next two days and a 40 percent chance of development over the next five days.
