The American Academy of Pediatrics recently updated its policy on physically punishing kids.

In a statement, the organization said parents should avoid spanking because it only increases aggression in children and does not teach responsibility or self-control.

In addition, doctors said they also found that physical discipline can have a negative effect on brain development.
