Software company ProptechOS has released its list of the “smartest” cities in the nation, examining places with the best climates for tech industries.
The study used three primary metrics to figure out how different cities fared, including connectivity, job markets, and green infrastructure.

More specifically, those factors break down as follows:
- Tech Infrastructure & Connectivity
- Mobile 5G efficacy
- The number of AI companies
- The number of Internet of Things companies
- The number of airports
- Green Infrastructure
- Air quality (exposure to PM2.5)
- 10-year tree loss
- 10-year tree gain
- The number of electric vehicle charging points
- The number of LEED-certified green buildings
- Tech Job Market
- The number of tech jobs advertised
Nationally, the “smartest” city turned out to be Atlanta, largely thanks to its robust tech infrastructure and job market.
“Atlanta has the fourth-highest internet download and upload speeds of any major U.S. city,” the study reads. “Relative to its population size, Atlanta also boasts the third-highest number of companies dedicated to the Internet of Things and the fifth-highest number of artificial intelligence companies.”
But in the Sunshine State, the top-ranked city was revealed to be Miami in South Florida, earning an overall Index Score of nearly 70%.
The Magic City scored particularly well when it came to its climate for tech markets, though it also received fairly decent scores in terms of connectivity and green infrastructure.
Despite the relatively high scores, this year’s ranking wasn’t necessarily a boon for Miami, as the city dropped down from its No. 2 spot in last year’s national ranking.
Meanwhile, the top 10 cities on the list are as follows:
