‘6-7′ was just dubbed the Word of the Year. Here’s what it means

Viral phrase among Florida’s top 10 searched-for slang terms

This week, Dictionary.com released its “Word of the Year” for 2025. And this year’s pick turned out to be a viral phenomenon.

To be exact, the phrase “6-7″ (read: “six-seven”) was picked, having seen a dramatic surge in online searches over the summer.

“Since June, those searches have increased more than sixfold, and so far, the surge shows no signs of stopping,” the website reads. “Most other two-digit numbers had no meaningful trend over that period, implying that there is something special about 67.”

WHAT IS “6-7?”

According to the report, 6-7 is thought to stem from a song by Skrilla titled “Doot Doot (6 7).”

Basketball player Lamelo Ball later created a trending video about being 6 feet, 7 inches by using the song, and within weeks, many children and teens were spouting the term.

However, Dictionary.com also provides a few other potential meanings to the phrase, such as “so-so” or “maybe this, maybe that.”

“Perhaps the most defining feature of 6-7 is that it’s impossible to define,” the report continues. “It’s meaningless, ubiquitous, and nonsensical. In other words, it has all the hallmarks of brainrot.”

OTHER FLORIDA SLANG

Appropriately enough, “6-7″ was ranked among the top 10 slang terms searched in Florida earlier this year, according to a report by Unscramblerer.

In order, those top 10 phrases are as follows:

  1. Aura Farming — Refers to a behavior (often referencing anime characters) where a person does something for the sake of looking cool
  2. 6-7 — There is no literal meaning to six seven. Its absurdity is the point, making it a prime example of “brainrot” internet humor where the randomness itself becomes funny. Kids and teens scream and chant it often paired with exaggerated hand gestures.

  10. Glazing — To praise someone excessively and insincerely. A way to call out behavior where excessive flattery is used.
