PORT ORANGE, Fla. – Two carjacking suspects were killed Wednesday night when the Mercedes they stole crashed into a tree in Port Orange as they were fleeing police, according to authorities.
The fatal crash was reported around 10:30 p.m. on City Center Parkway just east of Clyde Morris Boulevard near Port Orange City Hall.
Both men, identified Thursday as Dominique Saint-Vil and Diaquiri Chambers, were taken to Halifax Hospital, where they were pronounced dead, according to the Port Orange Police Department.
Police said the men were involved in a carjacking in Daytona Beach.
The victim in that case called 911, saying that he had been working in the area of Berkshire Road when multiple men with guns approached him and stole his white 2016 Mercedes C300.
"They stole my phone. They stole everything," the victim said.
The victim knocked on the door of a home nearby in order to call 911.
The stolen car was located in Port Orange and multiple law enforcement agencies tried to apprehend the men, police said.
The victim, who asked News 6 not identify them, said law enforcement where able to track his car's movements through his phone.
The Volusia County Sheriff's Office said that authorities never engaged in a pursuit, but they did use a helicopter unit and software to track the stolen vehicle as it sped through the area.
Stop sticks were successfully deployed on Willow Run Boulevard and again, moments later, with both sets of stop sticks puncturing the tires on the driver's side of the vehicle, the report said.
Deputies said Saint-Vil continued to drive with punctured tires, running a red light at Clyde Morris and Willow Run boulevards before slamming into a tree.
Saint-Vil and Chambers died as a result of their injuries from the crash.
Deputies said both men had a criminal history in Volusia County and they were suspects in several stolen vehicle and vehicle burglary cases in Daytona Beach. Chambers also had a stolen gun in his possession, the report said.
Chambers' great grandmother said he was about to be a father of a baby girl.
"He was a good kid, just hanging with the wrong people and it cost him his life," Alice Jelks said.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Port Orange police at 386-506-5838.
