Fight over cigar led to fatal Sanford shooting, police say

Joseph Irwin accused of killing James Gilson

SANFORD, Fla. – One man was killed and another was injured early Tuesday in separate shootings in Sanford, authorities said.

Sanford police said officers were called around 2:30 a.m. to the Wyndham Place Apartments, where they found James Gilson, 28, suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest.

Gilson was taken to Central Florida Regional Hospital, where he died, police said.

Joseph Irwin, 33, was arrested in connection with Gilson's death.

Sanford police said Irwin and his girlfriend were invited to Gilson's apartment before the two men got into an argument over a cigar. The argument escalated into a fight before Irwin pulled a handgun from a bag and shot Gilson, police said.

Irwin was taken to the John E. Polk Correctional Facility on charges of second-degree homicide and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Meanwhile, a man in his mid-20s was shot in the chest in a car that was in the driveway of a home on Mitch Court.

The victim was taken to Central Florida Regional Hospital in critical condition.

Officials said the shooter is on the run.

Although the shootings happened around the same time and not far from each other, police said they do not appear to be related.
