Nelson Flecha, 52, of Orange City, shot and killed Dr. Dimitriy Nikitin in the McCray Garage on the Florida Hospital Orlando campus just after 5 p.m. Thursday, Orlando police said.
Police said Flecha had a patient-doctor relationship with Nikitin, and video shows that the deaths were the result of a murder-suicide.
The motive for the shooting remains under investigation, police said.
Orlando police said they were not aware of any criminal history associated with Flecha.
Nikitin was an organ transplant surgeon who specialized in liver, kidney, pancreas and intestinal transplants.
Florida Hospital on Thursday issued the following statement:
"The Florida Hospital family is deeply saddened by the tragic event Thursday evening which has taken two lives, one of whom is Dr. Dmitriy A. Nikitin, a respected and talented multi-organ transplant surgeon. At this time, we ask for your sympathy as we and the family of Dr. Nikitin grieve for our loss."
