T.S. Ophelia Strengthens Over Open Waters

Forecasters Expect Strengthening During Next 2 Days

MIAMI – Tropical Storm Ophelia gained some strength Wednesday morning over the Atlantic Ocean, but forecasters said the storm could lose some of its power again in the next couple of days.

At 11 a.m. Wednesday, Ophelia was about 1,245 miles east of the Leeward Islands and was moving west at 16 mph.

Ophelia is forecast to continue moving in the same general direction through Thursday, with a gradual turn toward the west-northwest Friday.

The storm's maximum sustained winds had increased to near 60 mph with higher gusts. Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center said the storm could weaken in the next two days.
