Mystery odor causes scare at Cypress Springs elementary school

ORLANDO, Fla. – Students had to be moved to a different part of their school because of a mysterious odor early Friday afternoon, according to officials.

Authorities say the odor derived from a non-toxic chemical fungicide used to spray algae in ponds.

Orange County Fire Department officials say hazardous material crews were on scene earlier in the day at the Cypress Springs elementary school investigating the smell.

The students from seven portable units were moved to inside classroom, an Orange County school official said.

Authorities confirmed one child with asthma went home.
