DELTONA, Fla. – Supporters from all over the world campaigned to save an impounded Deltona pit bull named Snoopy, and their voices were heard by city officials.

The 6-year-old white pit bull was impounded January 3 after animal control deemed the dog dangerous.

"It breaks my heart for him to be away. Locked up like that," said Bob Johnson, Snoopy's owner.

Snoopy was attacked by a smaller dog off its leash on December 27, said Johnson. Both animals were hurt, but animal control officers said Snoopy's owner broke laws by not having his dog muzzled.

Snoopy's owner was notified to keep a muzzle on his dog after a prior fight in 2007.

Johnson posted Snoopy's story on Facebook, asking for help getting his dog back.

"You really get attached. You really miss them when they are not around. He followed me everywhere I went," Johnson, 77, said.

Soon after, Snoopy's story became international. Deltona's mayor said his office has been flooded with calls from throughout the world from Snoopy supporters.

The Save Snoopy Facebook page has more than 5,500 followers and an online petition has more than 21,000 signatures.

"It was amazing how fast it circulated. We are so thankful for the support," Johnson said.

City officials said they hope to resolve the matter as soon as possible and get Snoopy back home as early as Thursday.

A hearing was set for January 25 to determine Snoopy's fate, but officials say that hearing will no longer be needed.
