Former Beach patrol captain sentenced to 4 years probation

Jecoa Simmons asked former lifeguard to lie to authorities

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – A Volusia County judge sentenced a former beach patrol captain who was convicted of solicitation of perjury for asking a former lifeguard to lie to authorities during an investigation of sexual activity with teenage girls within the Central Florida agency.

Jecoa Duane Simmons, 38, was sentenced to four years of probation after a jury found him guilty last month of solicitation to commit perjury in an official proceeding, a third degree felony.

The maximum charge was five years in prison.

Simmons was fired from the Volusia County Beach Patrol after investigators started looking into allegations of sexual relationships between beach patrol officers and underage girls. He was arrested in 2010.

Simmons was caught on recorded phone conversations with a lifeguard he had previously had a sexual relationship with when she was 19. In the conversations, he told the lifeguard to lie to investigators.
