Judge: Accused killer fit to stand trial

Steve Bronson accused of killing Norma Page 30 years ago

OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. – The man accused of killing a young mother more than 30 years ago was deemed fit to stand trial on Friday.

Steve Bronson, appeared in court Friday, where the judge decided he would go to court, even after his doctors ruled he can't defend himself in court.

Bronson suffered a severe stroke and is now paralyzed.

Bronson, a convicted sex offender, was connected to Norma Page's death by DNA last year. Investigators say they believe he beat Page to death with a glass bottle.

Page's family was relieved that Bronson would remain in jail until his trial.

"We're excited. We're ecstatic," said Kay Myers, Page's sister.

But the family fears that it's only a matter of time before Bronson is a free man.

He can't stay in jail for more than five years if he's incompetent, and he didn't meet the criteria to be admitted to a mental hospital.

That's why Page's family is pushing for "Norma's Law," so if Bronson is released, nursing homes would be required to do a background check.

"We just don't want him in a nursing home," said Myers.

Bronson's attorney said his legal team will meet Tuesday to determine the next step to try and get Bronson out of jail.

Before his arrest, Bronson was living in a St. Cloud nursing home for seven years. There were no reports of violent conduct while Bronson was at the nursing home.
