New graphic anti-smoking ads to launch

Graphically depicts suffering of former smokers

The U.S. government is set to launch its first paid anti-tobacco ad campaign Thursday, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

The campaign will be include "tips" from former smokers, according to the press release by the CDC. The "tips" will be in the format of graphic ads similar to the one pictured above. A CDC official told the USA Today that the graphic images are tough to look at, but research shows the ads' effectiveness.

"Ads like this save lives," director of the CDC Thomas Frieden said." They pull back the curtain and show people that what I and other doctors see, which is the suffering, disability, disfigurement and death" caused by smoking.
