Gas leak forces evacuation of Maitland apartments

2 treated at scene; Children forced to leave homes

MAITLAND, Fla. – Eighteen apartments were evacuated early Tuesday -- and two people were treated by medical officials -- because of a gas leak at a Maitland complex.

The leak was noticed around 3 a.m. at the Grand Reserve apartments on Grand Brook Circle.

Dozens of children were among those forced to leave their homes in the middle of the night.

"I just woke up and then I saw the fire department," said 9-year-old Zachary Maykauff.

Gas was turned off to the apartments and residents were later allowed back into their homes.

A gas company is searching for the source of the leak.

There were no details about the conditions of two people who were seen being treated at the scene.
